Sir John Betjeman

Sir John Betjeman, CBE (28 August 1906 – 19 May 1984) was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who described himself in Who's Who as a "poet and hack". He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1972 until his death.

He was a founding member of the Victorian Society and a passionate defender of Victorian architecture. He began his career as a journalist and ended it as one of the most popular British Poets Laureate and a much-loved figure on British television.

Betjeman's poems are often humorous, and in broadcasting he exploited his bumbling and fogeyish image. His wryly comic verse is accessible and has attracted a great following for its satirical and observant grace. Auden said in his introduction to Slick But Not Streamlined, "so at home with the provincial gaslit towns, the seaside lodgings, the bicycle, the harmonium." His poetry is similarly redolent of time and place, continually seeking out intimations of the eternal in the manifestly ordinary. There are constant evocations of the physical chaff and clutter that accumulates in everyday life, the miscellanea of an England now gone but not beyond the reach of living memory.

Cavan Wood has been a Head of RE since 1993. He has written textbooks for Heinemann on Judaism and Buddhism as well as for the Think RE series. He is a regular contributor to Secondary Assembly File and a reader in the Church of England.

How to write a Thriller

Talk providing potential authors a few pointers in the direction and to help them avoid the most common pitfalls

_20150503_145711

Karla Forbes first began writing books when she was twelve years old. Heavily influenced by Ian Fleming, she wrote about guns, fast cars and spies. Naturally, she knew nothing of her chosen subject and was forced to use her imagination to make it up as she went along. These books, half a dozen in total, ended up being thrown out with the rubbish. Several years later, she dabbled in a futuristic sitcom and a full length horror story. Although both of these efforts were also consigned to literary oblivion, at least no one could have accused her of being in a genre rut.

She began writing properly more than ten years ago and her first book, The Preacher was published on Amazon in July 2011. Twelve books in total are available to download from the Amazon kindle book store. Other books will follow at regular intervals. She writes about ordinary people who find themselves in extraordinary situations and she aims for unusual but scarily believable plots, often with a surprising twist.

She lives in Haywards Heath with her husband and bull mastiff and has discovered that the secret of keeping them both happy is regular meals, praise and affection. They split their time between the UK and Germany where their favourite haunts are the Harz mountains and Bavaria.

Daisy White’s Booktique is an award-winning independent pop up bookshop. The Booktique ‘pops up’ in empty retail units/community spaces and galleries and hosts indie book signings, book launches, and artist days. We passionately support independent business and love to give people an affordable chance to showcase on the High Street. Pop Up shops also contribute to creating a vibrant, exciting High Street for shoppers.

Every time we pop up the Booktique is crammed full of literary lusciousness… selling books, luxury locally sourced goods like candles and chocolates, soft furnishings and art. It is a place where creatives can swap tips about publishing, agents, illustrators, writing, painting and generally have a good network whilst promoting their work. Where suitable we are joined by a host of ‘window models’ (chosen from the local community) bringing those book characters to life.

Daisy White is a Literary Entrepreneur, a writer, lover of Twenties hats and bacon sandwiches with brown sauce. She is also a mum of two small children who often burns the fish fingers whilst trying to catch up with her emails, and an avid runner of mud-filled adventure races. Booktique HQ is a half derelict cartshed and garage buried in the depths of the beautiful Sussex countryside. The official Booktique cat is called Asterix and likes to sleep in an Art Deco vegetable tureen amongst the boxes of books. Daisy has had many jobs, including scrubbing the blood off floors in A&E, driving an ambulance, and zooming round the world as cabin crew. Owning the Booktique means indulging her love of books, art and pop up shops! She is also a freelance consultant, taking on varied business and marketing projects.

In 2014 Daisy White’s Booktique was nominated for 6 business awards, winning the Innovation category at the JPS Business Awards.

Daisy was shortlisted for the Women of the Year Newcomer Award, and spoke at Number 10, Downing Street on Home Business/High Street pop ups with Enterprise Nation.

Consultancy projects include Pop Up Gatwick, and Pop Up Horsham (www.popuphorsham.co.uk) – giving entrepreneurs a chance to go from ‘Start Up to Stay Up…’ as they dip a toe in High Street trading.

In 2014 Daisy signed with US publisher Melange Books and her YA debut (‘Taming Tigers’) for their Fire and Ice Imprint is out July 2015. ‘Taming Tigers’ has been described as ‘Cinderella meets The Hunger Games’… For more please check out Daisy’s author site www.daisywhiteauthor.co.uk
