A Woman Living in the Shadow of the Second World War: Helena Hall's Journal from the Home Front. Edited by Linda Grace & Margaret Nicolle.

Miss Helena Hall lived in the village of Lindfield, which was in East Sussex until local government reorganisation in 1974. She was sixty six years old when World War Two started. She was a skilled artist, flag maker and embroiderer before moving to Lindfield in 1920, where she continued these crafts and became involved in many aspects of village life, including being librarian and member of Women's Institute, Bonfire Society, Horticultural Society and amateur dramatics.

The published journal starts on 1st January 1940 and ends on 9th May 1945, the day after VE Day. Sadly, the first two volumes, which covered the weeks from the outbreak of war on 3rd September 1939 are lost. The entries are full of personal and local events, such as distribution of gas masks, food and fuel rationing, collecting gifts for overseas personnel, comings and goings of military personnel, Air Raid Patrol service, volunteering in canteens etc. There are details about recycling, cinema films, radio broadcasts, vehicle restrictions on the village green – so many aspects of the war that are little known. Entries about visits to London and Brighton give a wider view. She also includes extracts from newspaper reports giving news of UK, Europe, North Africa and further afield. A small selection of black and white photos illustrate the village, people, events, cartoons and documents.

Overall, a fascinating insight into life on the Home Front.

The Rotary Club of Lindfield and Cuckfield have generously sponsored the Lindfield Arts Festival with a fabulous donation of £500.00.

This adds to the funds from Barrett Homes, The Bent Arms, Lindfield Parish Council, Mid Sussex Council, Lindfield Preservation Society and the Comber Trust.

With the High Street closed on Saturday 19th September, visitors to the Festival can enjoy a myriad of activities and performances from the road and wander safely and quietly around whilst there is singing, dancing, acting and a dalek around them.

The Festival is a non-profit making charity, run by volunteers and welcomes any support over the weekend.  The Rotarians offer their services to the Festival over the weekend by running the support communications "control control" and ensuring that everything runs smoothly.  However we need volunteers to man the events and monitor venues.  If you can help for an hour or so, please let us know.

The Rotary Club of Lindfield and Cuckfield are leading the way in more ways than one, thank you.

A big thanks to the many High Street shops for offering their windows to display pictures from the Alex Wilson Memorial Exhibition which will be at The Stable, All Saints Church, High Street, Lindfield from 10-4pm on 19th September 2015.

Different Lindfield Shops will host one of Alex's pictures in the run up to the Arts Festival.

Team LAF are working hard behind the scenes.  Not too many breaks with wine at the moment, but certainly everyone has a number of tasks to get done before the month of June is ended.

We have workshops arranged, Jacqui Smith is offering some design sessions at the new Barratts development in Gravelye Lane and the African Drumming workshop is back for another year too.  Peter Voight is offering to show you how to mend your violin, something you really need to know.

The programme is getting very busy and we are so pleased to welcome back both old friends and performers once again.  The Barefoot Players are showcasing 'Little Women' and the Mid Sussex Sinfonia are giving us a concert on Saturday night.

The Lindfield Plays will be fascinating to catch. Little snippets performed by local children and performers from all ages.  Living out Lindfield's History.

Sponsors have kindly made it possible for most of the workshops to be FREE, all you need to do is register on the website and collect a ticket from SWALK when they are available in August.

Talking of sponsors, we have so far secured funding from:

Barrett Homes, The Comber Trust, Mid Sussex District Council, Lindfield Parish Council, Lindfield Preservation Society and last but not least from Howard at the Bent Arms.  And without Cathy from Personal Potential Training we would not have our fabulous postcards nor would you see our adverts.

Then
At a time when poverty and deprivation were very much present in Lindfield, Comber’s Trust was formed by individuals who cared enough to help.
Now
Comber’s Trust continues – a local charity helping to support anyone living in Lindfield and in need, hardship or distress.
Comber’s can help make a difference to groups as well as individuals.
The trustees want to raise awareness of Comber’s Trust, and also to encourage Lindfield residents to give to the Trust for the benefit of others in need.
If you would like to make a donation, or would just like to know more, please contact the Hon. Secretary Caroline Brann on 01444 417443.
