Sir John Betjeman

Sir John Betjeman, CBE (28 August 1906 – 19 May 1984) was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who described himself in Who's Who as a "poet and hack". He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1972 until his death.

He was a founding member of the Victorian Society and a passionate defender of Victorian architecture. He began his career as a journalist and ended it as one of the most popular British Poets Laureate and a much-loved figure on British television.

Betjeman's poems are often humorous, and in broadcasting he exploited his bumbling and fogeyish image. His wryly comic verse is accessible and has attracted a great following for its satirical and observant grace. Auden said in his introduction to Slick But Not Streamlined, "so at home with the provincial gaslit towns, the seaside lodgings, the bicycle, the harmonium." His poetry is similarly redolent of time and place, continually seeking out intimations of the eternal in the manifestly ordinary. There are constant evocations of the physical chaff and clutter that accumulates in everyday life, the miscellanea of an England now gone but not beyond the reach of living memory.

Cavan Wood has been a Head of RE since 1993. He has written textbooks for Heinemann on Judaism and Buddhism as well as for the Think RE series. He is a regular contributor to Secondary Assembly File and a reader in the Church of England.

  • Kirlian photography originated in Russia in the 1930’s. It is a system of photography that uses electron avalanches to visualize an individual’s energy field radiating around the hands. Using the JAK500 Kirlian Camera, digital colour photographs can be taken of this electromagnetic aura.
  • Due to the abundance of nerve endings and meridian junctions in the hands and fingers an electro-magnetic field is particularly strong in this area. Because of this it is possible to get meaningful information about you from the Kirlian "Aura" around your hands.

The Lindfield Plays

By Robin Belfield

Directed by Robin Belfield & Jonathan Goodwin

A cycle of promenade plays inspired by Lindfield High Street. Each short play can be enjoyed as a stand alone piece of theatre or as part of this series commissioned especially for the Lindfield Arts Festival.

1. "THE BALLAD OF FRIAR TUCK"

Performed by: Sussex Actors Studio

Venue: All Saints Church

Performance times: 11am & 2.30pm

What is the truth behind the legendary Tuck - man or myth? Robin Hood's friendly fat friar or simply a ruthless rogue? Thereby hangs a tale...

2. "PERFECT SHADOWS"

Performed by: Stuart Angel

Venue: Outside Osborne Cottage

Performance times: 11.20am & 2.50pm

The year is 1592 and the theatres of London are on the cusp of a golden age, when disaster strikes. Forced to close his playhouse because of the plague, Philip Henslowe returns home unsure of what awaits him there.

3. "LOOK AWAY"

Performed by: Lindfield Dramatic Club

Venue: Outside the Toll House

Performance times: 11.40am & 3.10pm

Rumours are flying through the village - smugglers are coming and lots of them! They will pass through in the dead of night and all the villagers have to do is 'look away'. Easier said than done!

4. "MR. DICKENS"

Performed by: Laura Schofield

Venue: Outside The Stand Up Inn

Performance times: 12pm & 3.30pm

It's not easy being a celebrity, with everyone staring and sharing your every move. But Mary isn't a celebrity, she can only imagine what it must be like for her famous house guest. And are the motives of the housekeeper turned bodyguard as innocent as they seem?

Robin Belfield, previous Lindfield Arts Director 2013, Theatre Director and Producer is writing a Community Promenade Play to be performed in Lindfield High Street at different intervals throughout Saturday 19th September.

This play is about the history of Lindfield, including the historic buildings and the residents in past times. The scenes of the play will be acted out by local school children [Limepalm Productions], students from Sussex Actors Studio [Central Sussex College], Lindfield Amateur Dramatics and up to three professional actors.

The Promenade Play will benefit the visitors to Lindfield High Street by raising their awareness of the historic value the buildings have, the notorious and famous residents from the past and the enjoyment of seeing different aged actors enacting short scenes that will resonate with the community.
